Welsh meat processor wants grant to double production

An Anglesey meat producer is hoping for Welsh Assembly funds to help finance its expansion into new premises on the island, in a move which could create 30 new jobs.

Llechwedd Meats currently employs 20 staff, and wants to build a processing plant on a brownfield site in Llangefni, five miles from its current premises in Gaerwen.

Anglesey planners have given the green light to the project, but the development will only take place if Llechwedd is successful in obtaining the Cardiff grant, which will help it buy extra equipment.

General manager Nathan Roberts told Food Manufacture that the family-owned firm, established 24 years ago, has big ambitions: "We hope to double our production. We'll be doing different processes in the new place if it goes ahead. We believe there's a massive market for home-killed beef and lamb. It's getting bigger and bigger within the business and we haven't got enough capacity where we are now."

The proposed plant will incorporate an existing structure on the site and be almost 1,300m2 in size. Roberts said the facility, which would produce sausages and burgers, would have the potential to cope with expansion for the next 20 years.
